C'est un jeu dont le principe remonte aux temps très anciens, mais dont la véritable origine se situe en Inde, au XVe siècle, quand la table de jeu prend la forme d'une croix. Depuis ce temps-là, le jeu a évolué et connu maintes modifications. Il est apparu en Europe, pour la première fois, en Grande-Bretagne.
